WinterHaven Hotel Opens on South Beach's Ocean Drive
Two-year, Complete Restoration of Deco Architecture and Interiors
South Beach, Miami (Sept. 15, 2000) -- The WinterHaven Hotel, the newest hotel on Ocean Drive, is now open following a two-year, top-to-bottom restoration and renovation of its dramatic lobby and guestrooms. The hotel, located directly across the street from the Atlantic Ocean and beach, features ocean views from most of its guestrooms.
The 1939 Art Deco jewel offers South Beach rarities: five-star hotel service, refined and tasteful surroundings, and a quiet Ocean Drive location a few blocks north of the South Beach hubbub.
Oceanfront rooms are offered at $209 through Dec. 21, $249 from Dec. 22 through Apr. 30, 2001, and $179 from May 1 through Dec. 22, 2001 - one of South Beach's best oceanfront values.
The WinterHaven originally opened in 1939 and was designed by top Art Deco architect Albert Anis. It is now under the banner of the Naples, Fla.-based Coral Collection of Fine Hotels & Resorts, which also manages the nearby Essex House Hotel & Suites, another South Beach Art Deco gem.
The Coral Collection's principals have dedicated their careers to creating fine hotels. Joseph Freni launched the Ritz-Carlton, Naples, which won the coveted Mobil 5-star/AAA 5-diamond awards 10 years in a row under his leadership. John Ayres is a veteran of Marriott Hotels and the legendary Breakers in Palm Beach.
The WinterHaven's restoration focused on the hotel's dramatic double-height lobby, winding staircase, original glass ball railings and multi-level mezzanine. Original decorative details such as the ornate Chinese mirrored panels, and the etched glass wall panels were meticulously restored. The buffed terrazzo floors in the lobby and wrap-around patio are once again gleaming. Exact replicas were made of the original chandeliers, sconces, and maple and mirror registration desk. A new wood and glass bar curves along one wall.
The Art Deco interior is stylish yet understated to allow the architecture to shine. The new furniture, most designed in the Streamlined Modern style, combines maple, leather and fabric. The aerodynamic club chairs are clothed in russet leather, with sofas and dining chairs upholstered in deep jewel tones -- garnet, aquamarine, emerald and amethyst.
Most of the 70 guestrooms feature ocean views. Top-of-the-line are the oceanfront rooms with spectacular beach and ocean views, and one- or two-bedroom oceanfront suites with spacious corner bedrooms and adjoining parlors.
Room amenities include two-line speakerphones, dataports and voice mail; individual a-c control, cable TV, in-room safes, ironing boards and irons, and hair dryers.
The hotel is within walking distance of all the shops, cafes and clubs of South Beach. The downtown Miami business district, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami are all within a 15 to 20 minute drive.
